The Stanley is an authentic reproduction of the British Army V-neck jumper first developed during the late 1930s and worn throughout the Second World War by soldiers serving across Europe, North Africa and beyond.

Designed as part of the British Army layering system, it was intended to be worn over a woollen service shirt and beneath the iconic Battle Dress blouse, providing valuable warmth without restricting movement.

Please check the sizing as this is a much tighter fitting garment to our other jumpers.

Among those who wore this pattern was Stanley Biggs himself. In one of the most recognisable surviving photographs of our namesake, Stanley can be seen wearing this very style of jumper during his wartime service. It is this direct connection that inspired its name.

Faithfully reproduced in England, The Stanley retains the distinctive V-neck design and straight body of the original issue garment. While historically intended to be tucked into military trousers, it remains just as wearable today, paired with everything from denim and cords to tailored wool slacks.

It is a narrower gauge, so similar in weight and 'thickness' to our Wallis and Birkin jumpers (see collared jumpers).

The wool itself is something rather special. I

To recreate the character and appearance of original wartime examples in our collection, we worked with British-spun yarns produced from a carefully balanced blend of Masham and Bluefaced Leicester wool. The result is a remarkably soft and comfortable yarn that retains all the durability, breathability and natural performance that British wool is renowned for. The blend creates a unique colour and handle that closely mirrors original wartime garments while offering a level of comfort rarely associated with traditional military knitwear.

Like all good military clothing, The Stanley was built with practicality in mind. Wool naturally regulates temperature, remains comfortable across a wide range of conditions and continues to insulate even when damp. It is a fibre that has served explorers, soldiers and adventurers for generations.

Most recently, The Stanley was put to the test once again during our expedition across the Western Sahara. Worn throughout our journey in a pair of wartime Jeeps, it proved itself in one of the harshest environments on earth, protecting against cool desert mornings, strong winds, dust and the extremes of temperature that define life in the desert.

The expedition formed the basis of our short film, The Raid, which follows the journey across Morocco and the Western Sahara. We invite you to watch the film and discover how a design first created nearly a century ago continues to prove its worth today.
